Police Raids Prompt More Puan Violence

Police raided the offices of a residents¡¯ organization in Puan County, North Cholla Province, Saturday, arresting 11 people on charges of organizing a violent rally in the county earlier in the week. Residents vowed more violent resistance in the face of the increased surveillance by the police.

The crackdown on the Puan Residents¡¯ Committee Against the Nuclear Waste Facility came after the government pledged it would take stern measures against those proved to be involved in last Monday¡¯s violence.

More than 1,000 residents clashed with riot police after the government announced its opposition to the resident-proposed vote on the construction of a nuclear waste reprocessing facility on Wido, an islet off the county, leaving more than 100 protesters and police injured.

The police also seized more than 2,600 steel pipes, wooden sticks and other weapons that were used in recent violent protests.

The government beefed up security in Puan, by increasing the number of riot police from 1,500 to more than 8,000, following the outbreak.

No major violent incidents were reported over the weekend as the increased police force has been able to prevent residents from holding candlelight vigils in front of the branch office of the National Federation of Fishing Cooperatives, where the residents have been holding their vigils since the announcement the government¡¯s plan to build a nuclear waste facility in the county in July.

However, another clash is expected as officials at the residents¡¯ committee threatened more violence if the police kept preventing people from taking part in peaceful rallies.
